Israeli army caught using Palestinian children as human shields: commander suspended

CNN International

Haaretz

The Israel Defense Forces has suspended the commander of an operation in which troops ordered two Palestinian youths in the West Bank to stand in front of their vehicle to protect it from stones thrown by locals, the army spokesman’s office said Friday.

…Palestinian Information Minister Mustafa Barghouti denounced the suspension as window-dressing. “They are treating it as an isolated incident,” he said. “The problem is systematic and … they (troops) continued the practice despite the court order,” he said.

In 2002 the Israeli supreme court barred the use of human shields by the Israeli army. It is also illegal under international law. However, in 2004, the boy in this photograph, 13 year old Mohammed Bedwan, was tied to a windshield and then beaten after he was detained during an anti wall demonstration in the village of Biddu in the West Bank. According to Donald Macintyre, writing for Common Dreams, Rabbi Arik Ascherman of Rabbis for human rights protested the boy’s treatment and was tied to a jeep himself.

Palestinian children being used as human shields by the Israeli army is not new. What is new is to see it covered by US media, especially broadcast media.

Iraqi singer Shada Hassoun wins popular Arab Idol competition

Shada managed to accomplish in a few weeks what George W. Bush has failed to do for 4 years. She unified Iraq. Singing, wearing make up and displaying her hair, something women in Iraq were able to do before the US invasion but have been able to do less and less since the fall of Saddam Hussein and their “liberation” by the United States, she was supported by Shia, Sunni, and Kurd.

Maybe she should run for president.

Shada Hassoun wrapped herself with the white, red and black flag of Iraq and broke into tears as fans swarmed the stage after her victory on one of the Arab world’s most popular entertainment programmes.

An Islamist politician, Sabah Ahmed, said: “We welcome this woman because she has held the name of Iraq aloft. We needed a voice to unify us.”

“Being an Islamist, I have some reservations about singing. But seven million votes for this woman from walks of society. With this percentage she outclassed politicians in Iraq. Therefore the victory unites Iraqis,” he said.

US: Israeli use of Cluster Bombs in Lebanon may be an Agreement Violation

LA Times
from Reuters
Jan. 30, 2006

WASHINGTON — The United States said Monday that Israel probably violated an agreement on its use of U.S.-made cluster bombs in July’s war with Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.

“There were likely violations,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.

The State Department said it had delivered a classified preliminary report to Congress on Monday. McCormack declined to say how Israel violated U.S. rules, contending that such information was classified.

UN Denounced Israel cluster bombs
from BBC

The UN’s humanitarian chief has accused Israel of “completely immoral” use of cluster bombs in Lebanon.
UN clearance experts had so far (as of August 31, 2006) found 100,000 unexploded cluster bomblets at 359 separate sites, Jan Egeland said.

Mr. Egeland continued

…”What’s shocking and completely immoral is: 90% of the cluster bomb strikes occurred in the last 72 hours of the conflict, when we knew there would be a resolution,”

…”Cluster bombs have affected large areas - lots of homes, lots of farmland. They will be with us for many months, possibly years.

“Every day, people are maimed, wounded and killed by these weapons. It shouldn’t have happened.”

Palestinian Suicide Bombing vs. Israeli Massacre: CNN Reporting

Four people were killed in the attack on a bakery in the tourist seaside town of Eilat on January 29.

According to the NYT,

Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades and Islamic Jihad claimed joint responsibility for the attack, and identified the bomber as Muhammad Faisal al-Siksik, 21, from northern Gaza.

I’m not sure that anyone would adequately be able to describe the aftermath of suicide bombing. The devastation to all is unimaginable. The scene is unimaginable. It is infuriating, sad, pathetic, painful, avoidable and yet predictable.

CNNI

The same is true for Israeli attacks on Palestinians. Over 500 Palestinians were killed by the Israei occupation during the nine month lull in Palestinian attacks on Israel.

The United States, the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas and many other leaders around the world wasted no time in condemning the suicide attack, as well they should. All attacks on civilians should be condemned including those by the Israeli army. But Israeli attacks, no matter how horrendous, are rarely condemned. In fact the US vetoes UN condemnation of the israeli attacks.

The disparity in news coverage is profound as well. Above is the coverage of the Eilat bombing on Jan. 29, the day it happened. Below is the continuing coverage of that horror the next day.

CNN

Contrast that with CNN coverage of ongoing operations in Gaza in November which Palestinians called massacres. 40 Palestinians were killed during the ongoing operations during the five days before November 5, 2006.

CNN’s website, Nov. 5, 2006

In the past five days, approximately 40 Palestinians have been killed, 30 Palestinians have been arrested and seven groups of rocket launchers have been targeted by Israeli fire, an Israeli army spokesman said.

Among those killed was a 12-year-old Palestinian girl, whose death Saturday by an Israeli sniper was an accident, according to the IDF. The sniper was targeting a Palestinian in a group of armed men, the IDF said.

The entire report cites only Israeli officials and army. 8 of 11 paragraphs are Israeli statements or begin with Israeli statements. There are no Palestinians cited at all.

CNN’s broadcast report on the ongoing massacre, November 6, 2006

Other than the mention of the word massacre in Hali Gorani’s intro to the report, you would not know anyone was killed at all. Ben Wederman reports that this is the biggest operation since the Palestinians captured (my word) Gilad Shalit, he states he “was down near the Gaza / Israel border and you could tell that this was not the usual Gaza skirmish”. He then seems to lament that the operation was not as big as expected.

But never does he actually report on what Israel did. He only reports on what they said about plans for future operations. Neither does he cite any Palestinian reports of casualties or damage let alone actually report on the incident himself.

One incident that day which he failed to report was the shelling of a school bus with Palestinian children on board by the Israeli army, one child was killed.

Two days later, November 8, 2006
18 Palestinians were killed while sleeping, 13 were from one family, 8 were children. They were killed by an artillery barrage from the Israeli army. CNN once again reported completely from an Israeli perspective. This time Israeli officials “expressed regret” for the mistake.

Israel announces settlement expansion during Condi’s visit

Condi denies linkage between Iraq and current initiative

The suggestion of the Iraq study group may actually have led to Condi’s current diplomatic initiative in the Middle East including an attempt to jumpstart the peace process in Palestine/Israel. In a press conference in Israel however, Ms. Rice said that Palestinians deserve a state on its own merit and not because of the US need for help in Iraq from other Arab states.

CNN International:

Ok, Condi, you haven’t done a thing for the Palestinians or for the peace process for the past six years except starve and punish the Palestinian people for exercising their choice at the ballot box. Now you’re desperate, you need Arab support in Iraq and suddenly you’re making an attempt to jumpstart the peace process. OK, we understand you’re desperate and any relief would be welcome in Palestine and Iraq, whatever your reasons. However denying the linkage just makes you look ridiculous.

Add to that the announcement by Israel (while you’re visiting) that it will expand more settlements in the occupied West Bank and it’s clear once again that you are there only to do Israel’s bidding.

Unfortunately, this was only reported in the San Diego Tribune and Democracy Now.

Hebron Settlers behaving badly on CNNI and ABC

For many years the Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza have been subjected to vile harassment by settlers who are protected by Israel soldiers. Nowhere is the issue more visible than in Hebron/Khalil. Several years ago a few former Israeli army soldiers created the organization Breaking the Silence as a way of exposing the reality of what they are faced with and how the occupation has corrupted them and their behavior.

Their first exhibition was called “Breaking the Silence- Fighters Tell about Hebron”.

And the settlers are often more abusive and vicious than the soldiers. The abuse captured in the current footage would probably not make the exhibition. It is comparatively mild. The resulting investigtion ordered by Peretz is likely more of a PR move than a serious concern. Still, it is unusual to see on US television.

From CNN International

Mr Wederman just cannot call a settlement a settlement. He refers to it as a “Jewish enclave” amidst thousands of Palestinians. It is a little awkward then when he refers to the Jewish residents of this “enclave” as settlers. This is because all Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, which includes East Jerusalem, are illegal.

Israeli army kills 4 Palestinians in raid on Ramallah; Factional violence in Gaza escalates,

Egypt’s Mubarak condemns Israeli raid

“Israel’s security cannot be achieved through military force but by serious endeavors toward peace,” Egypt’s state-run MENA news agency quoted Mubarak as telling Olmert during their meeting in this Red Sea resort.

Olmert knows very well that Mubarak is not actually going to do anything. What would he do? What will anyone do?

CNN International covered both: Israeli attack on Ramallah and escalation of factional violence in Gaza.
